Today I went to the hospital to see my orthodontist and the great news is I am having my braces off on 15th August! I’ve got to wait until then because it takes half an hour and I will need another appointment a week later to have the retainer fitted but I cannot begin to tell you how happy I was to hear that it is almost over!
I also saw my surgeon on Friday for my last check up. I told him my only concern was that my bottom lip goes blue sometimes (especially after brushing my teeth). Apparently this is so unusual he’s never seen it before. I’m a medical mystery. My orthodontist had the same reaction.
I’ve just realised I am just about as far after the second operation as that operation was from the first. I think it’s safe to say that the wobbly screw delayed my recovery somewhat!
In a week it will be 5 months since the first operation and despite everything I have no regrets. It is amazing to breathe through my nose and to be able to bite together. Sometimes I will suddenly realise there is air coming out of my nose or wake up and realise my mouth is closed and my teeth and lips are together. These seem tiny things but for me they are life changing. Maybe one day I won’t be amazed by it but I hope it continues to amaze me all the time because it make it all worthwhile.
As for eating I’m now pretty much back to normal,excepting very chewy /crunchy food. I had my first piece of popcorn last Tuesday (it takes a while to eat it but it’s progress) so I feel pretty great. Although looking forward to biting into an apple, chewing a toffee, munching honey cashew nuts and eating a mars bar on 15th August.
I’ll update again in 8 weeks including pictures of me minus braces! This pic was taken by Becky last week – we ordered our favourite sausage roll, chips and beans in Polo but they brought the chips and beans without the sausage roll which were really the supporting parts of the meal.
